Hyaluronic acid has become indispensable in aesthetic medicine and cosmetics. It is the most important substance for the non-surgical treatment of deeper wrinkles, for building volume, for example in the lips and cheeks, and for contouring and rejuvenating the face, neck or hands. The secret lies in its high capacity to bind moisture, which makes hyaluronic acid an important component of our connective tissue and a volumizer.

From as early as the age of 25, the body's own production of hyaluronic acid decreases, leading to a loss of skin elasticity and a loss of volume. The skin accordingly becomes slacker and more wrinkled. With increasing age, there is also a gradual loss of fatty tissue and bony structures such as the cheekbones and jaw, as well as overstretching of important retaining ligaments in the face. At a certain point, this support apparatus can no longer sufficiently stabilize the overlying tissue and thus the skin. This causes the tissue to sink downwards with gravity, which in turn can lead to typical and usually bothersome changes. The midface is particularly affected. As a consequence, for example, dark circles under the eyes, deep nasolabial folds, jowls, drooping corners of the mouth, marionette lines, and a loss of contour of the jawline or the transition from chin to neck develop.
By injecting various volumizers (fillers), part of the lost hyaluronic acid can be returned to the skin and the underlying tissue. Hyaluronic acid is by far the most frequently used. The synthetically produced hyaluronic acid is almost identical to the body's own and is integrated accordingly. As it is recognized by the body as not its own, it is gradually broken down after a period of 4–12 months, depending on product quality, treatment technique, metabolism and other factors.

Alternatively, the loss of volume can be treated with targeted fat tissue transplantation (lipofilling). For this, small amounts of fatty tissue, usually from the abdominal region, are harvested by gentle liposuction, processed and then injected into the desired facial areas with a fine cannula.

Treatment concept

As with all aesthetic treatments, I place particular emphasis on a natural result when treating with hyaluronic acid or alternative volumizers (fillers). Here, I primarily follow treatment concepts that take into account the overall harmony of your face or another region to be treated. Using special injection techniques and very high-quality products that complement each other in their effect, particularly natural and stable results can be achieved. My patients are often bothered by certain wrinkles or by sagging and stressed skin. The art lies in treating not just the wrinkle itself, but rather the underlying cause, which usually lies in the loss of volume or elasticity in a facial region some distance away. You therefore benefit from a particularly gentle and holistic treatment concept that is intended not to change you, but to make you look younger and fresher.

Of course, I also offer classic treatments such as targeted volume restoration of the lips (lip augmentation), cheek augmentation and non-surgical nose corrections or facial contouring.

You therefore have the choice between holistic treatment concepts and targeted wrinkle and volume treatment as well as facial contouring.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about hyaluronic acid

Are there alternatives to hyaluronic acid?

Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) has established itself as a complement and alternative volumizer to hyaluronic acid. Like hyaluronic acid, this substance, which also occurs naturally in the body, integrates into the tissue and is completely broken down again over a certain period of time (usually after 12 months). Its advantages lie in its comparatively strong lifting capacity and duration of effect, which is why this substance is particularly suitable for building up and modeling various facial regions such as the cheeks or for contouring the jawline. In addition, individual facial regions can be tightened again and skin quality can be lastingly improved by stimulating elastin and collagen synthesis (skin rejuvenation). For skin rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction, the substance is diluted using a special process and injected very gently and multidimensionally into the upper layers of the skin. As with hyaluronic acid, volume effects are immediate; the first effects on the complexion appear after about 3 months. For more information, please click directly on Radiesse.

How long does the effect of hyaluronic acid last?

As I use exclusively high-quality hyaluronic acid products from leading manufacturers, you can expect the effect to last 5–12 months. As with treatment with other volumizers (fillers) or with botulinum toxin, increased metabolic activity or regular nicotine consumption can lead to significantly accelerated breakdown. A guarantee for a certain duration of effect can therefore not be given. Especially with muscular overactivity and resulting wrinkle formation (often on the forehead and glabella), it can also make sense to first weaken the muscles with Botox before injecting the wrinkle with hyaluronic acid. With this concept, the hyaluronic acid will remain in the tissue significantly longer.

What are the risks of hyaluronic acid treatment?

As with all injections or injection treatments, there is a risk, albeit a small one, of bruising (hematomas), inflammation or infection, and temporary redness, swelling or a feeling of tightness. Asymmetries, irregularities or palpable hardening can also occur. Allergic reactions or intolerances are conceivable but extremely unlikely due to the close relationship to the body's own hyaluronic acid. As hyaluronic acid is injected in the form of a gel, there is a potential risk of vascular occlusion (thrombosis), which, depending on the location, can cause permanent functional impairment.

In experienced hands and with the appropriate injection technique, however, the risks described can be reduced to a minimum or corrected with little effort. All aspects will be discussed and explained to you in detail in the personal consultation.

Why do treatment costs vary?

If you value treatment by a specialist with many years of experience and do not want to compromise on treatment quality, product quality and aftercare, you will also have to invest a little more. After all, specialist knowledge of tissue structure, its interrelationships and function, built up over years, as well as an understanding of aesthetics and proportion, cannot be acquired in a few weekend courses. So please consider in advance what is important to you and where your priorities lie.

What should I bear in mind before and after hyaluronic acid treatment?

Before treatment with fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid, Radiesse, etc.), you should not have any acute inflammation or irritation of the skin in or near the region to be treated. You should also not have any acute dental problem that is currently being treated. Blood-thinning medications such as aspirin (ASA), heparin, etc. should not be taken for two weeks before the planned treatment or should be paused or discontinued in consultation with your family doctor, as there would otherwise be an increased risk of bleeding. Treatment with fillers is not possible during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I only carry out corrections of other practitioners' work if the time and product with which you were treated are known.
If you want to be treated with hyaluronic acid for the first time, treatment at the end of the week or at the weekend may make sense, so that you can stay at home even in the unlikely event of a small bruise or swelling. Otherwise, there is nothing to prevent immediate treatment. Immediately before a planned treatment, you should cleanse your skin of cosmetic products as thoroughly as possible. The area to be treated is of course also thoroughly disinfected by the doctor.

After the treatment, you should not apply any cosmetic products to the treated area for approx. 12 hours, as this could encourage inflammation or infection. Cooling the region and avoiding physical exertion for two days are advisable. Smoking or nicotine has been shown to reduce the duration of effect or accelerate breakdown. Avoid mechanical strain such as pressure on the treated region for the first week, as undesirable shifts in the tissue are quite possible, at least in the first few days. Avoid strong UV light exposure and heat in general (no sauna or thermal bath for 1 week).
