Gentle correction of hip dips for a harmonious silhouette
Many slim and athletic women are bothered by the lateral depressions between hip and thigh, known as hip dips or hip indentations, which make the silhouette at this point look drawn in rather than round and curved. If you would like to have your hip dips filled, I offer a gentle, individually tailored hip dip correction in my practice in Stuttgart, with which these depressions can be specifically evened out and the transitions between hip, buttocks and thigh harmonized. The focus is on non-surgical correction with a highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid specially suited to larger body regions, which I can perform as a gentle injection treatment under local anesthesia directly in the practice.

Depending on the findings and your personal circumstances, volume restoration with the body's own fat may alternatively make sense, and in many cases the result can be further refined by a targeted improvement in skin quality. As a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, a particularly natural result that emphasizes your proportions rather than reshaping them is important to me. On this page, you will learn how hip dips develop, which correction methods are available, how the treatment works and what costs you can expect.

What are hip dips and how do they develop?

An anatomical feature, not a malformation
Hip dips are the lateral depressions on the outside of the hip that appear in the area between the upper iliac crest and the transition to the thigh and can be more or less pronounced depending on body shape. It is important to me to point out that this is by no means a malformation but a completely normal anatomical feature, determined mainly by the individual bone structure. The decisive factors are the distance and relationship between the pelvic bone and the greater trochanter of the femur, as well as the distribution of muscle and fatty tissue in this region.

Because the extent of hip dips depends largely on the bone structure and the genetically determined fat distribution, they generally cannot be specifically influenced by exercise and diet. On the contrary, in very slim and athletic women the depressions often appear even more pronounced, because the surrounding fatty tissue that could even out the contour is missing. This is exactly where aesthetic hip dip correction comes in, replacing the missing volume where the body does not provide it by nature.

Reasons for a hip dip correction

When the silhouette does not match your own ideal
The reasons why women decide on a hip dip correction are almost always aesthetic and have to do with the desire for a round, harmoniously curved silhouette. Many find the lateral indentations bothersome, especially in tight-fitting clothing, swimwear or certain poses, and want a flowing transition from the waist over the hip to the thigh.

Since hip dips, as described, cannot be trained away, the often years-long attempt to influence them through targeted training or diets is understandably frustrating. Targeted filling of the missing volume is the only truly effective way here, and that is exactly why it is important to me to explain honestly in the consultation what result can realistically be achieved and which method is most suitable in your individual case.

Our quality standards

Natural contours, gentle procedures, specialist safety
The correction of hip dips belongs to the field of body contouring and, precisely because of the larger volumes and the anatomically demanding region, requires a sound understanding of the tissue and vascular structures. As a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery with more than 6,400 procedures performed, I bring exactly this anatomical knowledge, which forms the basis for safe placement of the volume and a harmonious, natural-looking result.

My aim is always a result that blends harmoniously into your overall appearance rather than looking artificial or overcorrected. Less is often more here, and I deliberately rely on gentle procedures and careful, symmetrical planning so that both sides of the body complement each other in a balanced and natural way in the end. I take the time that this sensitive area deserves for the consultation, the treatment and the aftercare.

The consultation

Volume, contour and skin quality working together
Every hip dip correction begins with a detailed, personal consultation in which I first get a precise picture of your anatomy, your proportions and your wishes. I assess the extent of the depressions, the existing tissue and the quality of the skin, because all these factors determine which method and which volume will deliver the best result in your case.

An important part of this assessment is the honest evaluation of whether you primarily lack volume, whether skin quality should also be improved or whether a combination of different procedures makes sense. It is precisely from this holistic view of volume, contour and skin quality that an individual treatment concept emerges, which I discuss with you transparently, including the procedure, expected result and costs.

Hip dip correction methods

The right approach depends on your findings
Hip dips can be corrected in different ways, and the choice of method depends on whether and how much of the body's own fatty tissue is available as donor material, whether surgical or non-surgical treatment is preferred and whether skin quality is to be improved in addition to pure volume restoration. I explain the three key components below.

Filling hip dips with hyaluronic acid

My preferred approach, and the most suitable for most patients, is the non-surgical filling of hip dips with a highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid specially developed for larger body regions. In this gentle injection treatment, the volume is placed specifically in the depressions, so that the contour can be harmonized immediately. I perform the treatment on an outpatient basis in my practice under local anesthesia, so no surgery and no general anesthesia are required. An amount in the range of about 70 to 100 milliliters is usually used to correct hip dips, depending on their individual extent. The great advantage of this method lies in its simplicity, the immediately visible result and the practically non-existent downtime, which is why it can easily be integrated into everyday life.

Filling hip dips with autologous fat

If there is enough fat in other parts of the body, volume restoration with the body's own fat, so-called lipofilling, is an alternative. Here, the fat is first harvested by liposuction from a suitable donor region such as the abdomen or flanks, then gently processed and injected specifically into the hip dips. In contrast to hyaluronic acid, this is a surgical approach that requires you to have sufficient donor fat and to be open to a procedure. The effort, costs and recovery phase are correspondingly greater, but the result can be permanent if the fatty tissue heals in successfully. For very slim women without a suitable donor region, however, hyaluronic acid is often the more sensible choice.

Complementing with biostimulators

If, in addition to the missing volume, the firmness and quality of the skin are also to be improved, so-called biostimulators such as Sculptra, based on poly-L-lactic acid, or Radiesse, based on calcium hydroxylapatite, can also be used. These substances do not primarily add volume but stimulate the body's own collagen production, contributing to firmer, tighter skin and a subtle lifting effect. They are therefore not an equivalent substitute for genuine volume restoration, but they are a very useful complement with which the overall result can be further refined after or alongside filling. I deliberately distinguish between volume restoration on the one hand and improving skin quality on the other, because the two goals require different substances and complement each other excellently.

Hyaluronic acid or autologous fat? The right choice

A decision that depends on the findings
Whether hyaluronic acid or autologous fat is the better choice in your case cannot be answered in general terms but depends on several factors that we weigh up together in the consultation. The crucial question is first whether there is sufficient autologous fat in a suitable donor region at all, because very slim women in particular simply lack it, so hyaluronic acid is the obvious solution here.

Another important point is the question of the desired effort. Filling with hyaluronic acid is an uncomplicated injection treatment under local anesthesia with an immediately visible result and no significant downtime, while autologous fat transfer means a surgical procedure with prior liposuction, greater effort, higher costs and a longer recovery, but can deliver a potentially permanent result. Both approaches therefore have their place, and my task in the consultation is to assess honestly which approach best suits your anatomy, your wishes and your circumstances.

Hip dip correction Dr. Zimmermann

The hip dip treatment with hyaluronic acid

Gentle, precise and on an outpatient basis in the practice
I perform non-surgical hip dip correction with hyaluronic acid on an outpatient basis in my practice. After carefully cleansing the treatment area and marking the zones to be filled, which I do while you are standing so that the contour can be assessed precisely, I inject the highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid into the depressions in a targeted way and in several layers using fine cannulas. The treatment is carried out under local anesthesia, so it is well tolerated and largely low in pain for most patients.

During the treatment, I continuously pay attention to the symmetry of both sides and model the volume so that a natural, flowing transition is created. After injection, the treated area can be cooled for a few minutes. The result is visible immediately after the treatment; slight initial swelling is normal and subsides over the following days, revealing the final contour.

After the treatment: result and durability

An immediately visible and at the same time natural result
A great advantage of filling with hyaluronic acid is that the result is visible immediately after the treatment and the silhouette looks more harmonious right away. Slight swelling, a feeling of tightness or small bruises in the treatment area are possible in the first few days and usually subside quickly. For the first period after the treatment, I recommend avoiding intensive sports, saunas and strong heat for about one to two weeks and not applying unnecessary pressure to the treated region in the first few days, so that the injected volume can settle optimally.

How long the result lasts depends on individual metabolism, physical activity and the amount used, but with highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid a durability of several months up to a few years can generally be expected. As the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid slowly and naturally, the result can be maintained with a top-up if required. With volume restoration using autologous fat, by contrast, the fat that has healed in is basically permanent, although part of the transplanted fat may be broken down by the body in the first few weeks.

Possible risks of hip dip correction

When performed professionally, hip dip correction with hyaluronic acid is considered a safe procedure with few complications, partly because hyaluronic acid is a biocompatible substance that can even be dissolved again if necessary. Nevertheless, every injection treatment involves certain risks, which I will explain to you in detail before the treatment.

  • Swelling and bruising: Temporary swelling, redness or small bruises at the injection sites are normal and usually subside within a few days.
  • Feeling of pressure and tightness: In the first few days, the treated area may be somewhat sensitive to pressure or feel tight.
  • Irregularities: Very rarely, palpable irregularities can occur, which can usually be evened out by gentle remodeling.
  • Infections or vascular complications: Possible in principle with any injection, but very rare thanks to sterile conditions, fine cannulas and precise knowledge of the anatomical course of the blood vessels.

The last point in particular shows why the correction of larger body regions belongs in experienced specialist hands, because safe placement of the volume, taking the course of the blood vessels into account, is crucial for a course with few complications. I will discuss all points relevant to you openly with you before the treatment.

How it differs from a Brazilian butt lift (BBL)

In connection with volume restoration of the buttocks, the term Brazilian butt lift, BBL for short, often comes up. It refers to buttock augmentation with autologous fat, in which larger amounts of the body's own fat are used to enlarge and shape the buttocks. The BBL is thus an example of surgical volume restoration that can in principle also help treat hip dips, but differs in its aim from targeted hip dip correction. In the buttock area, my focus is clearly on contouring and filling hip dips, whether with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat, while large-volume buttock augmentation with autologous fat in the sense of a classic BBL is not currently a priority for me. Which method is right for your concern is something we clarify together, with an open mind, in the consultation.

Cost of hip dip correction in Stuttgart

Transparent prices depending on method and effort
The cost of a hip dip correction depends on the chosen method and the individual effort involved, in particular the volume required. For non-surgical filling with highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid, the costs for the usual amount of about 70 to 100 milliliters are in the range of around €1,400 to €2,000, depending on the extent of your hip dips and the desired result. With volume restoration using autologous fat, the costs depend on the surgical effort and are determined individually based on the findings, as the liposuction at the donor region and the processing of the tissue must also be taken into account.

I deliberately work in a results-oriented and conceptual way, and following your consultation I place great emphasis on full transparency so that you can approach your treatment calmly and with clear planning certainty. You will receive an individually tailored quote from me that lists all costs clearly. As this is an aesthetic treatment, the costs are not covered by health insurance.

Frequently asked questions about hip dip correction

What are hip dips?

Hip dips, also known as hip indentations, are the lateral depressions on the outside of the hip that become visible in the area between the upper iliac crest and the transition to the thigh. They make the silhouette at this point look slightly drawn in rather than round and curved.

This is not a malformation but a completely normal anatomical feature, determined mainly by the individual bone structure and the distribution of muscle and fatty tissue.

How do hip dips develop?

Hip dips result from the individual relationship between the pelvic bone and the greater trochanter of the femur, as well as from the genetically determined distribution of fat and muscle in this region. Depending on the bone structure, the depressions are more or less pronounced.

In very slim and athletic women, hip dips often even appear more pronounced, because the surrounding fatty tissue that could even out the contour is missing. It is therefore an inherent shape and not a consequence of being overweight or lacking fitness.

Can you train hip dips away?

Since the extent of hip dips depends largely on the bone structure and the genetically determined fat distribution, they generally cannot be specifically influenced by exercise and diet. Targeted training of the gluteal muscles can shape the region somewhat, but the underlying bone structure remains unaffected.

In very slim women, the depressions can even become more pronounced with weight loss. Targeted filling of the missing volume is therefore the only truly effective way to harmonize the contour at this point.

What methods are there for filling hip dips?

There are basically two ways of restoring volume to correct hip dips. Non-surgical filling uses a highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid specially developed for larger body regions, which is injected in a gentle treatment under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis in the practice. Alternatively, the volume can be built up with the body's own fat, which is a surgical approach.

In addition, so-called biostimulators such as Sculptra or Radiesse can be used if skin quality and tissue firmness are also to be improved. Which method or combination is suitable in an individual case is determined in a personal consultation.

Filling hip dips with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat: which is better?

Both methods have their place; the choice depends on the individual findings. Hyaluronic acid is an uncomplicated injection treatment under local anesthesia with an immediately visible result and no significant downtime, and is particularly suitable for slim women who lack suitable donor fat.

Volume restoration with autologous fat, on the other hand, requires sufficient body fat in a donor region and a willingness to undergo a surgical procedure. It is more complex and more expensive, but can deliver a permanent result if the fat heals in successfully. The crucial question is therefore whether there is enough autologous fat and whether a surgical or non-surgical approach is preferred.

How does a hip dip treatment with hyaluronic acid work?

The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis in the practice. After cleansing the treatment area and marking the zones to be filled while you are standing, so that the contour can be assessed precisely, the highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid is injected into the depressions in a targeted way and in several layers using fine cannulas.

The treatment takes place under local anesthesia and is well tolerated and largely low in pain for most patients. Throughout the treatment, attention is paid to the symmetry of both sides so that a natural, flowing transition is created. Afterwards, the area can be cooled for a few minutes.

How much hyaluronic acid is needed for a hip dip correction?

The amount required depends on the individual extent of the hip dips and the desired result. A quantity in the range of about 70 to 100 milliliters of highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid is usually used for the correction.

Since the two sides of the body can be differently pronounced, the exact amount is determined individually and discussed in the consultation in order to achieve a symmetrical and harmonious result.

Is filling hip dips painful?

The treatment is carried out under local anesthesia and is therefore perceived by most patients as well tolerated and largely low in pain. The use of fine cannulas also protects the tissue.

A slight feeling of pressure or tightness during and shortly after the treatment is possible, but quickly subsides. Overall, it is a gentle procedure with little strain.

When is the result of a hip dip correction visible?

A great advantage of filling with hyaluronic acid is that the result is visible immediately after the treatment and the silhouette looks more harmonious right away. Slight initial swelling is normal.

Once this has subsided in the first few days, the final contour emerges. With volume restoration using autologous fat, on the other hand, the final result only develops over several weeks, once the transplanted fat has stabilized.

How long does the result of a hip dip treatment last?

How long the result lasts depends on individual metabolism, physical activity and the amount injected. With highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a durability of several months up to a few years can generally be expected, as the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid slowly and naturally. The result can be maintained with a top-up if required.

With volume restoration using autologous fat, the fat that has healed in is basically permanent, although part of the transplanted fat may be broken down by the body in the first few weeks.

How much downtime should you plan for after the treatment?

Non-surgical hip dip correction with hyaluronic acid involves practically no downtime, so the treatment can easily be integrated into everyday life. Intensive sports, saunas and strong heat should be avoided for about one to two weeks, and no unnecessary pressure should be applied to the treated region in the first few days so that the volume can settle optimally.

With volume restoration using autologous fat, a longer recovery phase should be planned due to the surgical approach and the liposuction at the donor region.

What are the risks of a hip dip correction?

When performed professionally, hip dip correction with hyaluronic acid is considered a safe procedure with few complications, especially as hyaluronic acid is a biocompatible substance that can be dissolved again if necessary. Possible, mostly harmless side effects include temporary swelling, redness, small bruises and a feeling of pressure or tightness.

Very rarely, palpable irregularities or, as with any injection, infections or vascular complications can occur. Precisely because the safe placement of larger volumes requires precise knowledge of the course of the blood vessels, the treatment belongs in experienced specialist hands. All relevant points are explained before the treatment.

How does hip dip correction differ from a Brazilian butt lift (BBL)?

A Brazilian butt lift, BBL for short, refers to buttock augmentation with autologous fat, in which larger amounts of the body's own fat are used to enlarge and shape the entire buttocks. It is therefore a surgical procedure with a different aim from targeted hip dip correction.

Hip dip correction, by contrast, focuses on specifically filling the lateral depressions, whether with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat, in order to harmonize the contour at this particular point. Which method is right for the individual concern is clarified with an open mind in the consultation.

Can hip dips and flat buttocks be treated together?

Yes, many body contouring procedures complement each other and can usefully be combined as part of an individual treatment concept. In addition to filling the hip dips, flattened buttocks can be built up with volume and contoured at the same time to achieve a harmonious, round silhouette overall.

Whether and to what extent a combined treatment of hip dips and buttocks makes sense depends on the individual findings and personal wishes and is discussed in the consultation.

Who is hip dip correction suitable for?

Hip dip correction is suitable for women who are bothered by the lateral depressions between hip and thigh and want a rounder, more harmoniously curved silhouette. Non-surgical filling with hyaluronic acid in particular is suitable for slim women who lack the donor fat needed for autologous fat transfer.

A prerequisite is realistic expectations, which are discussed together in the consultation. Treatment is not performed, among other things, in the case of acute skin conditions in the treatment area, certain pre-existing conditions, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How much does it cost to have hip dips filled?

The costs depend on the chosen method and the individual effort involved, in particular the volume required. For non-surgical filling with highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid, the costs for the usual amount of about 70 to 100 milliliters are in the range of around €1,400 to €2,000.

With volume restoration using autologous fat, the costs are determined individually based on the findings, as the liposuction at the donor region and the processing of the tissue must also be taken into account. After the consultation, an individual, transparent quote is drawn up. As this is an aesthetic treatment, the costs are not covered by health insurance.
