Increased sweat production, usually under the arms or on the palms, can lead to major restrictions in social life, whether private or professional, especially when it causes persistent sweat stains on shirts and blouses or unpleasant odors for others. This results in feelings of shame and usually a high level of everyday distress.

If there is also so-called hyperhidrosis (a pathological form of sweating), deodorants, armpit pads or other measures used to try to control the above-average sweat production usually do not help either. It typically also occurs at complete rest, without exertion and at cool temperatures.

It should therefore first be clarified how long the increased tendency to sweat has existed, how pronounced it is and which factors may encourage it. This is very important, as there are forms of hyperhidrosis that are caused, for example, by medication or a hormonal imbalance (secondary form). A possible treatment would therefore not address the cause of the increased sweat production and should therefore be clarified further. There are also some factors that have been shown to lead to increased sweat production and that can certainly be influenced. These include obesity and chronic stress

Depending on the extent, circumstances and your requirements, various treatment methods are available to reduce sweat production, which may help you to a significantly better quality of life.

I would be happy to introduce them to you in more detail below.

Non-surgical treatment of the sweat glands with medication

The injection of botulinum toxin / Botox® has proven itself and become established as a very effective non-surgical treatment method that significantly reduces sweat production and thus sweating. The effect is based on a temporary blockade of the interface between nerve and sweat gland, so that the gland is no longer able to secrete sweat. Depending on the number and density of the sweat glands, an effect of up to 6 months can be expected, depending on the dose. The treatment can easily be repeated once the effect has worn off in order to achieve as lasting an effect as possible. With regular treatment, a memory or fatigue effect of the sweat glands can also lead to a lasting reduction in sweat production and a more stable result

Surgical sweat gland removal (suction curettage)

If you are interested in a treatment option that is as permanent as possible, sweat production can be reduced further by minimally invasive surgical sweat gland removal / suction. In particular, by using water-jet-assisted liposuction (bodyjet procedure), most of the glands responsible for sweat production on the underside of the skin are removed particularly effectively and at the same time gently with special cannulas. This method is used almost exclusively in the armpit region (for axillary hyperhidrosis) and can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or twilight sedation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about hyperhidrosis treatment

What do I need to bear in mind after hyperhidrosis treatment with botulinum toxin?

For the first 24 hours, we recommend not applying any irritating substances such as deodorants to the treated area, as chemical additives may cause irritation such as an unpleasant burning sensation. No further measures are necessary and you can resume your normal activities without restriction after the treatment. You can go out in public immediately.

What do I need to bear in mind before / after surgical sweat gland suction?

As an anesthetic fluid is first injected through 1–2 mini incisions and the sweat glands are then suctioned off with a special cannula, the armpits are placed under light compression with a padded dressing for 2 days, so that any remaining fluid is absorbed more quickly by the body and the treated areas quickly reconnect with the surrounding tissue. For one week, you should not use deodorants on the armpits so that the skin is not irritated and the wounds do not become inflamed. A few days after the procedure, we recommend caring for the armpit skin with an anti-inflammatory cream and massaging it gently. The armpits must be shaved two days before the treatment.

How long do the effects of the treatment options last?

As in aesthetic wrinkle treatment of the face, the effect of botulinum toxin can vary greatly. The decisive factors are the number and density of the sweat glands. On average, an effect lasting between 3 and 6 months can be expected. With surgical sweat gland removal, on the other hand, permanent results can be achieved.
